Farewell to a Cape Cod Icon: Tiki Port Closes After Nearly 50 Years

Jan 6, 2026 | Tiki News, Tiki Bars

The Tiki Port - Hyannis, MA

🗿 HYANNIS, MA  -  The neon glow has finally gone dark. After nearly five decades of mai tais, sizzling pu‑pu platters, and family celebrations, the legendary Tiki Port in Hyannis officially closed its doors on December 31, 2025, marking the end of one of Cape Cod’s most enduring and beloved dining institutions.

The closure, announced by the restaurant in late December 2025, brought an emotional wave of nostalgia, gratitude, and bittersweet goodbyes from generations of locals and visitors who considered the Tiki Port a cultural landmark.

🌴 A Half‑Century of Memories

Opened in 1977, the Tiki Port was more than a restaurant - it was a time capsule. Its lacquered wood, glowing lanterns, carved tiki figures, and classic Chinese–Polynesian menu transported guests into the golden age of American tiki culture. For many Cape Cod families, it became the backdrop for birthdays, anniversaries, first dates, and late‑night scorpion bowl adventures.

In their final message to the community, the owners captured the heart of its legacy:

“Since opening our doors in 1977, Tiki Port Restaurant has been more than a place to eat – it has been a place to gather, celebrate, and create memories… We are deeply grateful to the generations of customers, families, friends, and staff who made Tiki Port what it was.”

🍹 The Final Nights: A Rush for One Last Taste

As word spread of the impending closure, the final week of December saw a surge of longtime patrons making their pilgrimage for one last meal. Families posed for photos under the iconic sign. Former staff members reunited at the bar. Regulars ordered their favorite dishes “just one more time.”

Some guests even tried to take home pieces of décor - a testament to how deeply the restaurant was woven into local identity — prompting the owners to gently remind visitors to leave the artifacts behind.

🏮 A Vanishing Era of Chinese–Polynesian Dining

The Tiki Port’s closure represents more than the end of a single restaurant. It marks the fading of a once‑thriving regional tradition: the New England Chinese–Polynesian restaurant, with its flaming appetizers, oversized cocktails, and theatrical presentation.

These establishments were cultural touchstones - places where kitsch, comfort food, and escapism blended into a uniquely American experience. With the Tiki Port now gone, Cape Cod loses one of its last and most iconic examples.

What Remains: A Legacy of Joy

Though the doors are locked and the lanterns dimmed, the Tiki Port’s legacy lives on in the stories shared by its patrons:

  • The family who celebrated every graduation there.

  • The couple who had their first date over mai tais in 1983.

  • The tourists who made it a yearly tradition.

  • The locals who considered it “the Mecca of Chinese restaurants,” as one fan put it online.

For nearly 50 years, the Tiki Port offered a warm, glowing refuge - a place where time slowed down, the drinks were strong, and the memories were even stronger.

Aloha, Tiki Port — and Mahalo

As Hyannis moves forward, the Tiki Port leaves behind a legacy of flavor, nostalgia, and community spirit. Its closing night on December 31, 2025, wasn’t just the end of a business - it was the final chapter of a beloved Cape Cod tradition.

And for everyone who ever walked through its doors, the memories will remain as bright as the neon sign that once welcomed them.
