The Atomic Martinis: Tales From the Lava Lounge

The Atomic Martinis: Tales From the Lava Lounge

There are bands that form, bands that fade, and then there are bands that erupt back into existence — usually after a princess sacrifices herself to a Volcano God. Such is the legend of The Atomic Martinis, a RockaSoul/Blues outfit born from the neon glow of the 1990s cocktail revival and steeped in the exotic spirit of tiki culture.

So pour a Mai Tai, adjust your skinny black tie, and settle in. Here we go.

Hatched in the Cocktail Craze

The mid‑90s were a strange and wonderful time. Swing was back, martinis were cold, and a Gap commercial featuring jitterbugging dancers to “Jump, Jive and Wail” accidentally ignited a nationwide retro explosion.

Vibraphonist and vocalist (Sir) Scot Mensching felt the spark immediately. His first instinct was to form a jump‑swing band — until he read about Chicago’s Mighty Blue Kings taking over the Green Mill. Rather than compete, he pivoted.

On the West Coast, a different kind of revival was brewing: Rat Pack cool. Peggy Lee velvet. Andy Williams polish. Henry Mancini swagger. Martin Denny exotica.

Chicago had nobody doing that. So Scot assembled a five‑piece band with a female vocalist and set out to resurrect the pop‑jazz “adult music” of the late ’50s and early ’60s.

The Atomic Martinis were born — skinny black suits, Ray‑Bans, tiki gods with glowing eyes, and a sound that felt like a lounge act possessed by a jungle spirit.

Within a year, they were playing more gigs than they expected, in venues cooler than they ever imagined.

From Cocktail Cool to Cult Classic

Just as the scene began to slow, fate intervened.

Producer Bill Holtane of Sound Video Recording and Sound Imp Records called Scot with a request: Re‑record the original theme from WGN’s 1970s Creature Features TV show.

WGN ultimately passed on reviving the show — but Holtane pressed the track anyway, releasing it under the name The Moon‑Rays.

Chicago went wild.

The single sold heavily, became a Halloween radio staple, and eventually spawned a full album: Thrills and Chills, which went on to win an indie award in Santa Ana, California for Best Surf‑Oriented Album of the Year out of more than 50,000 submissions.

Four more Moon‑Rays albums followed over the next decade, cementing their place in the spooky‑surf‑lounge underground.

Eventually, the Moon‑Rays retired, and the Atomic Martinis slipped into legend.

Resurrection: The Volcano God Demands a Band

Fast‑forward fifteen years.

Princess Ananahla makes her fateful sacrifice to the Volcano God, and suddenly four of the original five Atomic Martinis feel the unmistakable rumble of destiny.

The band reforms — older, wiser, but still fueled by the same cocktail‑shaker chaos that birthed them.

The Atomic Martinis are back.

And they’re ready to play.

A Note From Sir Scot

“We resurrected this band from the 90s because the music still lives in us. Sit back, have a Mai Tai — here we go.”
